The famine that is affecting the Horn Africa could kill up to 11 million people. Children are hit worst, with their vulnerability to health and nutrition problems increasing exponentially. This situation can be attributed to the scarce rainfall in the last two rainy seasons, the result of the climate changes taking places across the planet, which have affected the Horn of Africa area particularly heavily. A foreseeable crisis that had already been announced months ago by the International Organisations and the NGOs in the field but which still, despite its seriousness, has not been the subject of widespread attention from the media or donors. This is the worst the situation has been in 60 years: acute malnutrition in under-5’s has risen by 30%, the daily mortality rate by 2/10,000, and people have access to less than 4 litres of water per capita/day, and less than 2100 kilo/calories. NGOs are talking about a humanitarian tragedy and the Pope has requested international mobilisation.
